Can I bring a stroller into the Polk Penguin Conservation Center?
Strollers must be left in the designated stroller-parking area outside of the penguin center entrance (similar to what is in front of the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery).
Can I bring food inside?
No; food and drink are prohibited in the penguin center.
Can I photograph the penguins?
Absolutely. Please note that cameras on tripods or monopods are prohibited indoors.
Will the 4-D Shackleton Endurance experience trigger motion sickness?
The 4-D entry experience includes blasts of “polar air” and “sea mist” as well as a 360-degree visual experience depicting crossing the Drake Passage to Antarctica – known for its incredibly rough seas. Exercise caution if you are subject to motion sickness or if you have a heart condition or other serious health problems.
When is the fountain open?
The fountain is open when the extended forecast indicates that the temperature will not drop below freezing.
Are swim diapers and towels available for the fountain?
Yes; swim diapers and towels are available for sale in The Drake Passage Gift Shop at the penguin center.
When is the Winter Rink open?
- The Winter Rink is open November through February. Visitors ages 4 and older are welcome to take a turn on the rink from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, weather permitting. Each skating session is 25 minutes long and the last one starts at 3:30 p.m.
- A limited number of skates are available to rent for $7, which includes a 25-minute skating session. Those wishing to use their own skates may do so for $3.
- The Winter Rink is not made of ice, but of a synthetic plastic known as Glice® – a material composed of heat-pressed layers of polymers – so no water or electricity is required for operation. The Detroit Zoo is one of only two zoos in the country to install a Glice® rink.
Can I have an event at the Polk Penguin Conservation Center?
