Do I have to wear a mask in the Polk Penguin Conservation Center?
Yes, regardless of vaccination status, masks are required indoors for all people ages fives and older Detroit Zoo guests ages.

How do I guarantee a visit to the Polk Penguin Conservation Center?
The Polk Penguin Conservation Center is free with Detroit Zoo admission; however, entry to every guest is NOT GUARANTEED. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all guests, those planning to visit the Polk Penguin Conservation Center will join the organized queue line adjacent to the building entrance. Detroit Zoological Society memberships and advance admission tickets will not guarantee a pass to the Polk Penguin Conservation Center.

Can I bring a stroller into the Polk Penguin Conservation Center?
Strollers must be left in the designated stroller-parking area outside of the penguin center entrance (similar to what is in front of the Wildlife Interpretive Gallery).

Can I bring food inside?
No; food and drink are prohibited in the penguin center.

Can I photograph the penguins?
Absolutely. Please note that cameras on tripods or monopods are prohibited indoors.

Is the 4-D Shackleton Endurance experience sensory friendly?
The 4-D entry experience includes blasts of “polar air” and “sea mist”, sound effects and a 360-degree visual experience depicting crossing the Drake Passage to Antarctica – known for its incredibly rough seas. If you or a member of your visitor group is effected by loud sounds, moving imagery and other simulated effects, please see a team member to guide you through an alternate experience. If you are subject to motion sickness or if you have a heart condition or other serious health problems, please exercise caution.

When is the fountain open?
The fountain is open when the extended forecast indicates that the temperature will not drop below freezing.

Are swim diapers and towels available for the fountain?
Yes; swim diapers and towels are available for sale at Drake Passage Gifts inside the penguin center.
